Languages in Scotland

We speak Scottish ! 

Well not really since as you might (should ?) know the official language is not Scottish but English. So easy right ? But you might have to get used to the accent.

Official currency in Scotland

Money, money, money

The official currency is the Pound Sterling. Better get a money converter on your phone so you can manage your expenses more easily. And you need to know that the Scottish notes have the same value all around the United Kingdom but are not necessarily accepted everywhere. 

Credit/debit cards are pretty much accepted everywhere and if not you will very easily find an ATM. Trustworthy exchange offices are also easy to find in airports and big cities

Be sure to warn your bank that you are traveling so that they won’t block your card for suspect abroad transactions.

Traveling in Scotland

Is the steering wheel on the left or right ?

Traveling in Scotland is best with a car. TO rent one you will need to be between 23 and 6( years old or you will have to pay an expensive insurance. 

And about the steering wheel, well it’s on the right side of the car and Scots drive on the right side of the road … So most of us will need a little adjustment.

Transportation

• Flights : different airlines have domestic flights :
  – Eastern Airways (about £88)
  – FlyBe/Loganair (about £105)
  – Hebridean Air

• Ferries : about £35/person and a car for an 8 to 15 day cruise with CalMac.

• Busses : the Explorer Pass de Scottish Citylink pives you unlimited access to busses in Scotland for 3.5 to 8 days, for a maximum of £97, it also gives you discounts for other bus and ferry companies as well as youth hostels. 

• Trains : around £79 for a long trip. More expensive than the bus but more comfortable.
  

• Car rentals : prices fluctuate a lot. Online, you can find good deals, starting at £13/day for long-term rental. On average it should be around £35/day.
  Gas is about £1.13/liter. 

Accommodations 

• A camping pitch for a tent and a car should be around £26.5.
• A night in a youth hostel will be around £22/person.
• Hotels are usually very expensive and low standard. Exact around £88/night. 

Eating

• Food cn be quite expensive but you can manage to find a sandwich for £4.4, typical dishes for £22 and eating in a bar should be around £13.
