Official currency in New-Zealand

Money, money, money

The official currency is the New-Zealander Dollar (NZD). Better get a money converter on your phone to manage your expenses more easily. 

If you need to go to withdraw money, don’t worry there are banks with ATMs everywhere in big cities. But the best way to pay remains credit/debit cards, Visa and Mastercards are accepted everywhere.

PDon’t forget to call your banker and tell them you’ll be using your card abroad, otherwise they might think it is fraudulent activity and block your card ! 

Traveling in New-Zealand

Is the steering wheel on the left or right ?

Traveing in New-Zealand is best by car. To drive/rent a car you will (most likely) need an International Driving Permit, need to be at least 21 years old. You can also rent a travel van for more independence.

And for those who were wondering on which side the sterling wheel is ? Well it’s on the right side of the car and people drive on the left side of the road, so most of you will need a little adjustment time !

Overall cost of a trip in New-Zealand

Thank you for all the information but how much will this cost ?

Transportation : 

• About flights, many airlines have domestic flights and there is a large price range. For example for a flight from Wellington to Christchurch expect about 50 NZD.
• About bus, you will find trips starting at 1.70 NZD. And in the city centres of Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton, busses are free !
• Gas will be around 1.93 NZD/liter, and it is more expensive on the Southern island than on the Northern island.

Accommodation :

• On average, a night (in a hotel) is around 50 NZD. Don’t forget about the youth hostel, they are cheaper (around 22 NZD/night), as well as Couchsurfing (sleeping at a local’s house for free). These two options are very common in New-Zealand. A great way to save money ! As for campsites, they are about 15 NZD/night.

If you plan on staying longer than 3 months, you will need a VISA. They start at 170 NZD.
